We all know THE UPSIDE cater perfectly to life on the go and that doesn’t stop at the day-to-day. At this time of year, many of us are packing a bag and beelining for family, friends and well-earned travel. Recently, I took a little half work/half holiday trip overseas and with the help of THE UPSIDE I was sitting pretty on board the hassle-free transit train with pieces that not only look good, they’re easy to care for, comfortable and versatile enough to take you to different destinations and occasions with ease. As your (self-appointed) expert travel wardrobe road-tester, here are some reasons why I’ll now pack my passport, activewear, rest of my wardrobe – in that order.
If your in-transit style does nothing but satisfy one thing, it should be comfort. I’m not interested in making a run at airport style akin to the latest jet-setting celeb (I’m missing the on-board stylist, makeup artist and first class seat), I simply strive to be relaxed and if you can be stylish at the same time? Well, that’s the upside of THE UPSIDE I’ve just discovered travelling in yoga pants and, for so many reasons, I’m sold! They’re breathable, they allow me to pretzel up in to my teeny economy seat, they’re perfect for that little stretch I should do more often at the back of the plane and they also have a compression element; ideal for assisting with circulation – comfy/cool from wheels up to touch down. The legwear pieces are not only a breeze to wear with versatility to boot, they come with comfort levels through the roof, giving me my best shot at looking fresh at the other end despite my body having no idea where or what time it is.
I’ve found myself wrestling with the dreaded baggage allowance many times in my life. From my early days of backpacking to my most recent penchant for shopping overseas, suitcase
weight restrictions and I have never really seen eye to eye. In order to avoid a repeat of Ireland 2007 where I had to wear most of my wardrobe on top of itself (complete with a pair of sneakers slung over each shoulder) in a stubborn attempt to avoid paying an excess baggage fee, these days, my suitcase is mostly filled with activewear – why? Because it weighs next to nada, that’s why! And along with being light as a feather, many of the pieces pack down to nothing. I was particularly thankful for the ability to throw a teeny tiny pile of clothes in to my carry-on for an outfit switch during stopovers.
This wardrobe will certainly prove just as valuable once you’ve arrived at your destination. As a general rule, I tend to pursue an aesthetic that’s pretty laid-back but cool (hopefully? Don’t answer that). Now, while this is certainly my style modus operandi at home, it tends to lay back even further when I’m travelling – full recline. So, thanks to sport luxe apparel making a recent and very confident leap to the front of the ‘my favourite clothing’ queue, my sightseeing attire was very cooly curated.
Don’t get me wrong, on holiday I will take a few opportunities to wear a pretty dress (one that I most likely never wear at home) with those heels I just HAD to have but almost NEVER wear. But, if it’s acceptable for me to wear a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers from morning coffee through to late night aperitif – I want in. So, along with outfits for those evenings that require a little more, a tight edit of t-shirts, sweaters, shorts, and tights makes for a versatile collection of clothes for every occasion in between.
Thank god for this booming sport-luxe trend, it couldn’t lend itself more perfectly to travel. Worried there’s not an iron in your Airbnb? Don’t! Having to iron things on holiday can be a real P in the A so I’m thrilled to tell you – none of these pieces need it! Living the wrinkle-free dream, my friends. They’re also quick dry, making holiday laundry a walk in Central Park. It’s the little things.
And don’t forget, one of the best ways to beat the dreaded jet-lag is to get out and sweat so with an assortment of energy enhancing workout wear at the ready, you can go from transit to workout in a matter of minutes, allowing you to literally hit the ground running when you reach your destination.
Whether travelling by planes, trains or automobiles, you won’t regret stocking the suitcase with stylish activewear, it’s the perfect way to maximise your travel wardrobe.
Happy Holidays and safe (and stylish) travels from THE UPSIDE!
