Whilst listening to a friend rave about the “burn” they felt during a trampoline workout they’d taken part in, I found myself quite surprised. The last time I had been on a trampoline I was yet to reach my teenage years and the ‘burn’ came when my brother intentionally bounced too high resulting in my soaring straight into the springs. The memories aren’t pleasant, but despite my childhood trampoline experiences, I knew I had to try out the class that was my girlfriends insisted was like “nothing they had ever done before.”
Barre-based classes are inspired by ballet postures whilst combining the disciplines of yoga and Pilates. Dance Barre by Katie Dickens is a fitness studio, situated in Brisbane’s inner-north, which runs dance-based workouts. As well as offering a number of Barre specific classes, the studio has floor/mat, kettle bell and bounce workouts to cater for differing preferences, abilities and schedules. The studio has gained considerable popularity and fantastic reviews since it’s July opening. However, like any other fitness craze, I needed to see for myself what all the fuss was about.
The Bounce Fit class is a high-intensity cardio class performed on a mini trampoline. There are three different levels of classes that are offered at Dance Barre. Each level is slightly more challenging than the previous. I took part in the Level 1 class because I wanted to get a feel for the workout. This choice was also because of the little faith I had in my adult bouncing ability. Levels 2 and 3 work on and off the trampoline and introduce handheld dumbbells to increase intensity. As with any other form of exercise, it’s important to challenge yourself while increasing at a pace with which you and your body are comfortable!
I must admit I was a little apprehensive because I am the furthest thing from a dancer. I was extremely thankful to quickly realise that my lack of rhythm was not going to let me down. My little co-ordination pulled through and bouncing to the beat of the music made for a load of fun. Thirty-minutes doesn’t seem like a lengthy workout but trust me, it was intense. The welcoming atmosphere and awesome tunes, however, managed to keep my mind off the pain. I left feeling both refreshed and accomplished.
Despite initial reservations, I thoroughly enjoyed the workout and believe you me I will bounce again. Bounce Fit is most certainly the perfect workout to spice up your fitness regime this season! Your booty will thank you for it.
